A common question we get is "What should I be doing to care for my knives between sharpenings?"
Here are a few quick tips to keep those blades happy:
- NEVER put your knife in the dishwasher! Between the heat and the detergent, it's a very quick way to damage the steel and the handle. After use, just give it a quick hand wash and dry.
- Store your knives on a magnetic strip. This is the best way to avoid hurting the edge. If you keep them in a drawer, always keep a guard on them when not in use. Plastic knife guards are inexpensive and do a good job of protecting from wear and injury.
- Use a honing steel regularly. This will keep your edge straight and prevent a lot of unnecessary wear and repair. The edge of the knife tends to roll a bit from coming in contact with the cutting board. When you hone on the steel you straighten the edge back out.
